Zombies and John

I'm so glad it's zombies and John and not like Zombies and... me! These little creeps are looming on the Minigore horizon and have got their entire family with them. I, for one, will be taking my railway engine (well, actually it won't be mine) and getting the hell out of here well in advance. Oh, and the railway engine is because the depot is going to be a pretty quiet place when everyone is running for the, yes -- boats and ripping each other to pieces before the zombies even have a chance! Well, luckily John is sticking around as you can see here. He looks determined.


Episode 2 is in the pipe as some you might have read from Minigore Twitter along with a fix to the OS 3.1 music problem. I was able to fix it in a bit over one day after submitting, so we took it and resubmitted on 11th (for those wondering, we did submit once on the 9th, as well, but felt music was important enough to warrant a fix).

I want to let you guys in on something we are planning and I also want to get some wild ideas from you on something.

Let's talk about our plans first. We are going to introduce a new mode in the next update! The new challenge mode gives you a possibility you test your survival skills against a predetermined number of furries. It's complete with online leaderboards, of course, so it's going to be ranking the performance based on time.

Now, about the wild ideas... you guessed correctly, it's the zombies. If you could have the zombies do just one thing, what is the thing you always wanted see them do? The only requirement is that it significantly impacts the way you play against these brainless fellows. Other than that, it can be anything you want - maybe it will involve crowd behavior. Permission to go crazy officially granted!

  1. I would LOVE it if the zombies didn't just go directly after you, but just stumbled blindly around. Then, if they got close to you or they heard you firing your weapon they would start chasing you. You could even have it so that if one zombie is after you it will make nearby zombies aware of your presence.

  2. I would like to see if possible more graveyards. Maybe have some of the zombies come out of their graves. Also it would be nice if they had zombie dogs. It'd be like a different version of the flaming mini fury. What about your "3 clover special" maybe in this one you could turn into something else, like Milla Jovovich from Resident Evil.

  3. 1 vote is for the zombies to go into 'hug' mode! If you get too far away, they start to lose their minds with the fear that they'll never get a hug again and so start shuffling a little quicker, pushing and beating each other out of the way, getting quicker and quicker until finally the last few are then 'faster shuffling zombies' [akin to the fast fiery furry] out to get the mother of all hugs. Cause after all, that's why zombies have their arms out like that. It's the international standard peace sign for hugs. Right?

I think that the zombies should grab the furries and throw them at you or eat them and get bigger as they eat them, and they should be able to get the clovers too and when they get three, they go on a zombie rampage and go faster or turn into a REALLY monstrous zombie. And some of them should have more than one life, like when they fall on the ground, some just get back up and start chasing you again. Well, those are just some ideas that I just popped up, try to give me feedback on them

  6. A little fun fact, zombies actually do have brains, and no they do not eat them. They'll eat any flesh - it's the virus that attacks your brain, and within 24 hours the virus will completely turn you into a zombie. (lol, my doctor should be concerned)

    Anyways, zombies shouldn't do anything. They'll just slowly stumble towards you. Zombies' strength is in numbers. In zombie mode, the object is defense. Perhaps you're in some sort of house, or on one side of a fence, or a river or whatever you guys decide. John's mission is to keep barricading this barrier, as the zombies keep closing in on him or another objective (a perfect time to introduce john's daughter as a character!). And because zombies are so ludicrously easy to kill, the score should be time, not kills.

    To finish off (I need to stop the long posts), limbs falling off is a GREAT idea. Limbs would fly off as the zombie loses health, sometimes the zombie loses it's legs and is reduced to crawling. The death effect would be a head exploding, and the decapitated torso simply falling over. A humor source AND game dynamic, rolled into one!

    This is an amazing idea!!! This should totally be in the game. That way the zombie game mode isn't just survival with zombies and not furries it gives it a whole new depth

  15. I like the idea of falling off limbs, maybe have a vital shot like game like paintball? If you hit off-center it does less damage than center shots, sorta like headshots but because of the view just side to side chest and arm shots. Have limbs fall off if you hit them, but zombies keep coming.

  16. Best idea I've seen so far:
    Zombies coming out of the ground, instead of the edge of the map.

    That would make the game so much more intense, as long as it takes a few seconds for the zombies to get fully above ground, and stepping over an emerging zombie doesn't hurt you.

  17. I want some improvment to the map so like a house or river maybe even an entire new map for zombies but that would take a while (maybe in some further updates) but also defintely a chainsaw would be awesome so if you can put that in the next update that would be so cool.

  18. I think that zombies should lose their heads after sustaining significant damage. After losing the head, a zombie would lose the ability to damage John but instead immobilize him, preventing movement until destroyed (the only thing scarier than a zombie horde is the inability to flee from it, IMO).
    Side note: I think there should be a new map centered around a river with a slow current, which would add a new dimension to the gameplay: with a river, you could jump in and fight the current, or be able to float downstream to safety, and could introduce piranhas or some such aquatic threat (such as zombies washing ashore).

  21. The first bullet removes an arm, the second removes the other. At this point, the zombie begins to run at you.

    The next bullet would remove a leg, reducing them to a hop. Another bullet would remove their last limb which'd reduce them to a crawl (I'm really not too fond of this part, but I'll throw it out anyways).

    The next and final bullet would kill them.

    I think the above would make for some interesting gameplay. You couldn't (or shouldn't) just spray into a group of zombies; if you remove, say, 3 zmobies' arms, you'd have 3 zombies rushing towards you (I guess it'd be like shooting a furry and turning it into a fire furry).

    So, the best strategy would be to take each zombie down 1 by 1, which could prove to be quite a challenge in the heat of the moment.

  22. I'd like to see the Zombie mode set in an urban environment in the streets with abandoned cars and a general messed-up town environment. It could be cool to include a barricade that one or more players must defend against the zombie hordes, maybe something like piled-up furniture, etc.

  28. well... I think Zombies & Hunger go together... So Zombies should stumble about, but home in on blood. So if John gets injured, the zombies start coming at him in merciless waves until he is overwhelmed.

    However, it does feel like there should be someway to overcome that peril. Perhaps if you are able to get enough clovers to transform, your wound gets cauterized and you remove the blood scent?

    Another thought ties into my other idea... Zombies as a third party enemy. Meaning they'll feast on furries (and reducing your chance to get score over time/hazard/survival) as happily as they feast on John. So if they bump into furries (or if you lead furries into zombies), the zombies will begin attacking the furries (and perhaps vice versa).

    So perhaps one way to remove the blood scent is too kill enough furries in a spot that the scent of their blood attracts the zombies away from john.

    Of course there is always the simple timer option (perhaps accelerated by 'wiping' the screen)... but that feels kinda lame... at least in that, I like the idea of an endless horde of piranha-like zombies - once you're wounded, it's inevitable... it's just a matter of how many more seconds.

  29. i like the idea of having furries and zombies. My idea is the game starts as normal with the furries. once you kill a few furries (1 or 2) it goes to a cut scene of a zombie coming up from the ground in the graveyard and a furry passing by. once the furry is within a certain distance of the zombie the zombie then runs (at fire furry pace) towords the furry and eats it. the zombie then continues to slowly wander round aimlessly. another zombie then appears from the graveyard just to show that the zombies will continuosly keep coming from the graveyard. it then cuts back to john gore. the catch being that if the furries are heading for you (john) the zombies will get closer too. and if the zombies get too close obviously they will run after you at (fire furry pace). the reason i keep emphasising fire furry speed is that if a zombie runs after a fire furry he cannot catch it coz they are moving at the same speed therefor bringing the zombie much closer to john until you kill the fire furry. an idea for killing the zombies would be that once you hit them you blow there head off leaving their bodies to run in random directions at fire furry pace killing furrys in its path and splitting the larger furries making the later stages slightley easier. alternativley the remaining bodies could turn all furries they touch into fire furries therfore you need to take down the bodies as fast as possible making the the later stages much harder.

  31. Alright alright, well, theres a timer at the bottom. It starts at day time in an urban/country side environment. Furries are coming at you, as you shoot them you get points and money. At the very bottom of the screen protected by a kind fence, is a shop. When you enter, time either 1) stops or 2) just keeps going, but furries gather outside waiting for the fence gate to open to eat you.

    Anyway, in the shop you can buy weapons, ammo, (possibly armor) and DEFENCES. You use the money to buy some of these, and once bought defences appear on the right hand side and weapons on the left. That you can swipe up and down to change weapon/defences. Plus, under teh defences 'tool bar' there is a button, a red button.

    When you exit the shop gate slowly opens (while one to stop teh furries getting inside the shop closes), and you use 1 free grenade (off the shop keeper) to kill some of the furries. Then you fight your way back out into the open.

    When the timer gets to 0. Another timer starts (but it is hidden and it varies getting shorter each round.) In that time the sun begins to set and the furries stop coming. In this time you can build defences to protect yourself from teh zombies. Press the defences button to lay out defences, and a little sim style move and drop (crane?) hand comes to help you lay the defences. The shop is closed at this time, you also cant use weapons.

    When the hidden time gets to zero, a new timer starts which gets longer each round (the first timer stays the same every time) and zombies come out of the sides and the graveyard, which is at the top of the screen, a few furries also come out which sometimes get eaten by zombies then they get a little bit faster better and bigger.

    You hide behind the defences, (or not if you didnt buy any.) And fight the zombies which are considerably harder then the furries. Thriller dance then the zombies kill you, irish dance when the furries kill you :)

    Zombie types:
    Stupid- Bumble about, body parts fall off, push each other.
    Normal- Dont move unless they see you or another zombie on your trail, body parts fall off.
    Boss- BIG ZOMBIE. Squashes all other zombies and destroys defences quicker.
    Flaming- Screaming fast zombies that die after a set period, blows up barrels.

    Maybe others?

    Defences-
    Barrels, wall, house, sand bags, cage (hard to shoot through), steel (to make zombies go into a tight formation, big zombies only can destroy steel.)

    Others?

    River that opens at night by the shope keeper to wash away blood smell?

  32. IMHO, Zombies should move more randomly.

    Also, sometimes, one Zombie should "eat" (actually morphing with it, but an eating animation with some tentacles around should do the trick) another one, thus becoming bigger and a lot stronger (and faster), so your main objective is not only "killing Zombies", but "kill Zombies before they become superzombies". You could then add different kinds of "fusion zombies", one that is extremely fast, one that's extremely tough, and so on...

  33. What about the first zombie that touches you doesn't hurt you right away but grabs John. While John is trying to get away from the zombie by moving the right stick very quickly ( or shaking the iPhone :-D ), other zombies can reach John. And if John can't get away from the zombie holding him before another zombie reaches him, he gets hurt. By doing that, zombies would kindda use "teamwork".

  34. Love the shop idea. Basicly what I would like to see is a defence type mode so that it's not just the same game with zombies. A shop would be like the coolest thing ever but I understand it may take a while. Let me put it this way if you made a zombie invation mode set in an urban inviornment with a shop like mentioned above I would pay for that update (not that I would want to but I would) please do this! The other ideas may be able to be incorperated as well but don't just rehash the survival game with zombies instead of furries. Plus games with multipul game modes sell really well. Your main compitiotion is idracula and alive 4ever. Unordered to beat these 2 add varying game modes, more wepons and enviornments. This could potentialy be a great update if it's not just survival with zombies

  35. Anon September 15, 2009 8:36 PM's idea of Zombies not going toward you until you're close is a great idea. Of course, if barricading is put into place they would always know where you are. Also, the city map is a good one too. Despite MiniGore's extremely polished gameplay I must admit is is very repetitive. Also, the river idea I like. Very... calm... in an ironic way because everyone else is dead. All characters should be slowed down by water.

    And there ABSOLUTELY MUST BE a Michael Jackson easter egg. It's not worth implementing zombies if the zombies do not dance to thriller.

    I don't think they should necessarily just wander around, but rather, they should flank you, instead of just honing in perfectly like the furries do.

  38. How bout zombie dogs and normal zombies that fall back into the ground when dead. And another type of zombie that when shot sends their head bouncing toward you. And zombies either bite you or vomit on you and make you move slower. Also add moans and groans. If this is in episode three call it think lifes hard try death cuz their zombies. Add a safe rooms and health points you can buy with points you earn like Nazi zombies. Honestly I think this game is better than Alive4ever. It's more unique and playful.

  39. Everyone knows that Furries attack anything with legs. "Get off my leg!!!". Zombies have legs. So Furries and Zombies don't like each other. They fight each other. Furries should be attracted to Zombies just like they are to John Gore. But some Zombies explode. Ya never know which ones go pop until it's just about to explode. Larger Furries can overcome Zombies where Exploding Zombies have a low area of affect. Their explosions take out Furries near by as well as machine gun toting adventurers standing too close.

    I think the idea of a timed game and a number of kills are both great modes to add to the game.

    You could add X# of Furries killed in an explosion to the letterboards. "Death by Exploding Zombie!"

    The game is fantastic and all the ideas here are great. Keep up the AWSOME WORK! Thanks for the game and keep the updates rolling.

  40. If you decide to add these zombies in a survival mode, I think you should do a little Nazi Zombie spinoff. Like have waves. Wave 1, no brainer, wave 2 easy, wave 3 easy, and then made it hard at 10 and so on. It would be great, especially with co-op. That way, no need to remember scores! You could say "Oh I got to wave 20" Also, upgrades! After every few levels or so or have a little shop on the map where a user can use points obtained by killing to get upgrades. For example, have the users start out with a very slow-firing gun. So, they can upgrade to faster firing, shotgun, the grenade, dash, machine gun, or maybe a rocket launcher or something. Sure, itd be a bit of work, but Nazi Zombies is the single greatest game mode ever. Imagine how great this would be.....just a suggestion....

    Anyway popping out of the ground is a great idea, but furries coming from the edge of the map is a major game mechanic something else would have to be changed. Furries in groups is by far the most challenging and fun gameplay element, maybe multiple zombies could come out of one big hole? think gears of war.
    Shooting of body parts would work well aesthetically too, the it should be set apart from other iPhone zombie games though. Any limbs should be given physics too, like flying into other zombies and disorienting them, etc.
    Great job anyway mountain sheep, waiting eagerly for episode 2.9!

  45. Instead of having clover leafs to turn into a flaming minotaur-goaty creature, pickup 3 fuel cans to activate your chainsaw. Once it's activated, wade through the zombies like minotaur through furries! While its activated, pickup aditional fuel cans to prolong the usage of this formiddible weapon.

  49. Coolest idea so far is having the zombies eat the furries, and maybe become faster for doing so.
    Maybe giant furries could eat zombies, zombies could eat tiny furries. And normal furries and Zombies could just fight or something. It be cool it was John VS Zombies VS Furries instead of Furries and Zombies VS John. I can just imagine a zombie eating a fire furry and catching on fire and dying.

  54. Guys. Your updates are good ideas but I don't want to play survival mode with zombies.... ITs just not any fun. Not that zombies poping out of the ground isn't cool or a thriller victory dance but what is it going to do to the game? All that is is changing the furry models to zombie models and having them spawn in differnt spots. A defence-like minigame (like nazi zombies) would bring in more sales becuase there is more varity. You could still have a thriller victory dance if the zombies one in defece mode. I agree that you should be original and not totally copy nazi zombies or whatever but come on adding zombies should be a whole new game mode not just chaging beast mode into chansaw mode. Then what would be the differnce between furry's and zombies. I really like some of the suggestions that I have listed (and more) but think bigger. What would improve minigore? I always think that multipul game modes sells games becuase theres more to do. We already have a survival mode and a campign mode coming down the road so why add zombies to the survial mode when you could make a whole new mode all together? Sure it may take a while for the update but we're getting a whole new addition to the game.

No Nazi zombies though, it just ruins it and I've had enough of them anyway -__- Bring in spawn graveyards and maybe random ammo crates from abandoned shacks and houses. Also new areas like swamps, graveyards and a take on the Half Life 2 level: Ravenholm. That would be immense :)

  58. Needs missions. If you have missions you can have all kinds of zombie ideas and not just stick to one. I like the idea of Johns daughter needs rescuing. I also agree about a grave yard level. Different levels would be amazing or at least different waves so we feel we are getting somewhere. I like the idea of having the Zombies limbs fall off so first shot they lose the arms and second loses the head. My original idea is if the zombie bites John he turns into a zombie and slows down until he turns back to normal. I also think it would be amazing to have something like a clover that allows John to grow and the bigger he gets the more shots he can take. Imagine John getting as big as a big furry that would be awesome. The first growth his gun turns double and then big John has a triple shot gun. Anyway I'm stoked on whatever you guys do thanks for giving us a say.

    would be cool if roaming actually allowed you to find things/items etc - there doesnt seem to be any advantage to moving around - unless im missing something :/ :D

  60. I think a maze level would be cool. You will have to very careful in the design of the level to make sure it is still playable. At then end of the randomly generated maze, would be his daughter that he has to escort back to the beginning. It would start with normal furies and if you take a wrong turn, you end up in a graveyard. Be careful not to shoot or walk on the graves or the zombies come alive.

    The Zombies could walk through walls, an upon contact with a normal fury the furies become zombies. If you can clear all zombies on the level, then the zombies cant spawn anymore, unless you shoot or walk on a grave.

    The score would be based off of the number of kills and time to complete the level.

  61. I think the zombies should be stronger the bigger the group they are in. Thereby
    creating a whole new strategy than "furrie mode". Making you hunt the map to pick off large groups before they get to overpowering.
    You could also make them more agressive the bigger the group and more apt to wander aimlessly the smaller the group.

  64. It would be awesome if the zombies could throw their heads and limbs at John. I also like the idea of upgrading your gun! It would go simi auto rifle, AK-47, then Minigun! Also they HAVE to have a shop in the future. Also it would be cool if you could lead an army to fight another army of zombies and furries!
    One last idea: enamy soldiers, they could have low acuracy shotguns!

    I'll comment on the one by Pugway at this point. I agree it might make sense to put zombies into a defense type of game mode. What Rett suggested about the house or river would work in that case and you could maybe combine that with Jingseng's idea about homing in on blood.

    So many ideas! Can't wait to start prototyping this...

  70. in zombie mode,john gore should have a extra life becoming a zombie him self and throwing dead zombie heads at a much slower rate than the gun,to even it out..

    weapon in stead of shotgun have a flamelthrower were zombies run away till the burn,and if the manage to hit john he bursts in to flames...

The only reason we have so many anti-capitalists like Van Jones these days is because idiots like you won't let a good product be unique; it must be exactly like something else, it must have two dozen different weapons or else it gets one-starred. What's the point in owning two of the exact same thing? Let MiniGore thrive it it's own light, not Left 4 Dead's. L4D and CoD5 are both great games, but all we need is one. Have some variety in your life.

  77. Every so often, a brain pops out when you shoot a zombie. The brain could be like a clover, and if you pick it up something happens? I like the idea of John Gore doing a little super kick ass karate move in the air and gravestones fall from the sky and kill all zombies, however new onces spawn slowly. This would be useful for tricky situations!

    Is that after camp get a clue? It was already stated that they couldn't submit episode 3 when episode 2 was pending, else the pending application would be canceled.

    The submitted date is now the 11th September. There won't be two updates coming one after the other. The way it's going their might not even be one!!

  92. That's two weeks now. Never in the history of time has an update taken so long to be approved. I want to ask what the big deal with Minigore is? No other app I have ever been interested in has ever had this problem?

    I'd also like to point out that Q3 is almost over and there is still NO NEWS on Hardgore? Is that even happening anymore?

    I have been obsessed with Minigore, I have checked at least twice a day for the last 6 weeks for an update. Now I think I'm going to give up because this is ridiculous.

    1 week then Minigore is DUMPED.

  107. I've got an idea, I think you should make the zombies AI kind of like in Left for Dead. They stay in packs and dont see you if ur far away, but then if u get thrown up on They all sprint towards you until the throwup wears off. I think this worked very well in left for dead and it should work in Minigore.

    But to keep it original you should do the throwup thing with blood instead of throwup. By the way a defensive mode like NAzi Zombies would work amazingly. I think you should make it rounds survived not time.

  110. The coolest thing about minigore that keeps it separate from the rest is its stunning visual effects. I think spending more time to create things like a hut or river for refreshment would be magical. Honestly a hut where John can go pick up new weapons instead of finding crates is a way better for the gamer, when you find a crate there is nothing to it then picking up the crate but if you earn money or clovers or whatever to buy new weapons it becomes a challenge and makes you feel like your working for something. That would be AMAZING! You can have certain guns for certain monsters like a crossbow for zombies and a huge knife to slice the balls off of a child molester...whatever though your call. All I have to say is Hut..Hut..Hut it would be a Hit...Hit...Hit!!! Thanks! -Mike C.

  111. There should be a hardgore style version of Steve Jobs thats mixed in with the zombies that moves extra extra slow and rejects (repels) all the bullets that hit him. The only way to kill him is with Beast Mode.

  114. After playing the beta some more I think I would a change in the 3 clover system. Here is just a suggestion and open for debate and I apologize if it was already brought up. I would like to have a chance to earn back health by getting 3 clovers, then if I am at full health he would go into beast mode. It would be a nice "risk/reward" situation. If are on your last health, getting 3 clovers will keep you in the game longer than going into beast mode.

    Let me know what you think...I also posted this on the tester forum.

    - Zombies coming out of the ground, instead of the edge of the map. That would make the game so much more intense, as long as it takes a few seconds for the zombies to get fully above ground, and stepping over an emerging zombie doesn't hurt you.



    OFF TOPIC POST which i think is a GREAT idea

    - I think there should be a new map centered around a river with a slow current, which would add a new dimension to the gameplay: with a river, you could jump in and fight the current, or be able to float downstream to safety, and could introduce piranhas or some such aquatic threat (such as zombies washing ashore).


    THIS WOULD BE AWESOME FOR ZOMBIES!

    - I'd like to see the Zombie mode set in an urban environment in the streets with abandoned cars and a general messed-up town environment. It could be cool to include a barricade that one or more players must defend against the zombie hordes, maybe something like piled-up furniture, etc.

    ^^but dont have John Gore defending the howle game, just have little building type things that you can unlock the door and then put a chair there for a few seconds until it gets overwhelmed and you have to break out of the little building by shooting a whole in the wall

  117. worker zombies (ie another type from the foot soldier zombies) pick up limbs of dead(er) zombies to create a boss zombie... you must go out of your way to kill the worker zombies to prevent the boss from becoming too big.
